Pool orientation

In small gardens or backyards, we do not always have the opportunity to choose the location and orientation of our future pool. On the other hand, in many other cases the homeowner can choose among different places in order to build the leisure space.

When thinking about building a new pool many questions may arise regarding the pool orientation. Do I have to place it where there is more sunlight?  Should I keep it far away from trees and plants so that the leaves do not fall inside? Will my pool get dirtier if I do not consider the prevailing wind directions?

The correct answer is that both sun and wind are an important factor when selecting the perfect spot for your pool. So, it should be a sunny spot, far from trees and plants and facing towards the prevailing wind direction of the specific loaction.

Let the sunshine in!

Considering the amount of sunlight and shade is critical to choose your pool orientation. Not only should you consider how many hours of sunlight and at what time of the day but also how the house itself or the surrounding landscape elements will cast shadow onto the pool.

Do not forget that after or before diving into your pool, you will want to lie down on the pool deck in order to get a tan. So, try to get as much sunlight as posible. The colour and brightness of the water will also look differently. The less sun the pool gets, the less bright will its colour shine. If you have small children or a sensitive skin, you may also need to consider providing some shading with a sunshade or a pergola, for example.

Branches and leaves

Plants and trees are a fantastic element in any garden because they cool the environment, but when there is also a pool they can be hassle. Think about what kind of plantings you would like to have around your pool and choose the ones with the minimal leaf drop. This way you’ll have a low-maintenance relationship with your pool. Consulting a good landscape gardener will always be a good help.

Where to place the skimmers?

And last but not least, we have to think about where to place the skimmers because it will save us a lot of maintenance time. Skimmers helps to clean the pool water by capturing floating dirt such as flowers, leaves or dead insects. They should also face the predominating wind direction and the eye ball jets just in front of it. If it’s a rectangular pool, they should be placed on the small walls. This way we’ll keep dirt from building up on the corners of the bottom and on the floating line. Do not protect the skimmers from the wind!

We understand that sometimes there are limited options because of the existing building or the space available for the new pool.  Of course the optimal situation is when you are designing your new house and you can start the building of the pool from zero. Anyway, we recommend you contacting a reliable pool builder who will help you with this important decision.

If you are desperately searching for pool prices in the internet, please be careful!  Do not trust the low prices that some websites announce.

Don’t forget that you will have to live with your pool for many years, many summers, many kids’ birthday parties and many family barbecues… So it’s a good idea to think long-term. Cheap pools are not a good investment. It’s better to rethink your budget and get the gorgeous pool you always dreamt about. Fair pool prices are arguable.

The most usual shapes when building swimming pools

One of the main concerns when deciding to build a swimming pool is determining what shape it will be and then choosing its colour.

Wherever the pool is going to be situated, the first step when it comes to building a pool is deciding on its shape – as there are endless possibilities.

Before establishing the shape of the pool, we must carefully analyse the characteristics of the garden and surface area to make the most of our water area.

This step has to be studied with care as it is not only about each of our personal and aesthetic tastes but we also have to take into account where the pool will go, and the shape and size of the space. We also have to consider the use to be given to the pool when making our decision – so it is time for some reflection before deciding on one shape or another.

If we take pools built using the traditional concrete system as our basis, we have an advantage when it comes to choosing the shape as concrete pools can be designed in any irregular shape.

With regard to the type of site where the pool will go, this factor carries weight in terms of cost and greater or lesser difficulty when making the pool, as we will have to adapt to irregularities in the shape of the site.

Lastly, we have to stop and think about how we intend to use the pool, as it will be a decisive factor when it comes to choosing a certain shape. For example, if we want to do sport and swim lengths, a long, narrow pool will be perfect, but if we want to have a kid’s area in the pool, the wider that part is, the better and it should also be shallow.

One division of frequent pool shapes is traditional square, rectangular or round ones and the irregular ones that are no standard shape and whose design is limited only by your imagination and the dimensions of the site.

Rectangular pools

Among traditional shapes, rectangular pools are among the most preferred as they are easy to integrate into almost all gardens. A rectangular shape always gives an image of sobriety and elegance, whatever the general style of the pool.

There are several other shapes derived from this category – pools that are based on the rectangle but presented as an “L”, “T” or “U”.

Square pools

They are not very frequent either because they are usually impractical. This type of design is usually used when one of the sides is next to the wall of the house, for example.oor space. Sandy swimming pools are an example.

Kidney-shaped pools

The traditional kidney shape is, no doubt, the star of many private gardens thanks to its functionality and appearance. The main features of this line are that it is an attractive design and it adapts easily to winding sites.

Triangular pools

These are bordered by three straight sides. They are not very usual when being built privately and are normally in response to very specific needs of the site.

Irregular-shaped pools

Ones with no symmetry and complete freedom of form. Pools with an irregular design easily adapt to the site whatever its shape and dimensions, thus allowing us to get much more out of our outdoor space. Sandy swimming pools are an example.

The first step to being successful in building a pool is the select the colour. Whether you are renovating your pool (if it is made of marble or glass mosaic tiles) or whether you are building it yourself from scratch in your garden.

If you still have not dug the hole, you may have to… but that is the least important aspect.

Let us tell you what is really important. Are you familiar with the RENOLIT ALKORPLAN reinforced pool liner?
It’s not a tongue-twister: the liner itself (imitation marble) looks more real than the marble. 😛
The reinforced liner gives a result that is almost identical to marble… and now we’ll explain the “almost” bit.

As you know, marble is a compact rock with a White-veined, crystalline texture that is often used for building and sculpting: pools are no exception and they have also been used as subject matter by artists and as collector’s items… without anyone who is in your garden noticing it, the reinforced liner is a less expensive, fast and easy to install system.  You will have an attractive pool in the twinkling of an eye.

A pool that your friends are bound to love….
